Rate Hike Odds Jump to 57% — Nvidia Drops 4.6% After Warsh Speech

The bond market moved first. That detail matters more than the headline.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh used Jackson Hole to restate that the two percent inflation target is firm — and to add that if underlying inflation is not moving there clearly and fast enough, the Fed has work to do. That is not a neutral sentence. Traders repriced immediately: the implied chance of a September rate hike went from roughly thirty-five percent before the speech to about fifty-seven percent by Friday's close.

Watch the transmission order, because it tells you what was actually driving the tape. The two-year Treasury yield — the maturity most sensitive to Fed expectations — jumped about thirteen basis points to four point three six percent, a one-month high. Equities followed, not led. The Nasdaq fell about half a percent. Nvidia dropped four point six percent, one day after an eight point seven percent surge on powerful AI guidance. Gold fell about three percent as higher-rate odds got priced in.

Here's the falsifiable part. If this move was genuinely rate-driven, then gold, long-duration tech, and the two-year yield should stay correlated into the next data print. If Friday's August jobs report — a Reuters poll expects about fifty-eight thousand — comes in hot and yields rise while gold rallies anyway, the rate story is not the whole story and something else is bidding.

If you trade rates or cover fixed income professionally and you read the transmission differently, say so in the comments. We'd rather be corrected early than confident late.
