Markets Rip Higher, Bonds Say NO | 30Y Hits 5.22%, Gold Tops $4,100, Bitcoin ETF Flows Collapse

Microsoft just posted its best single day in nearly eighteen years, South Korea delivered the largest one-day gain in its history, and Apple and Amazon walked out of the same earnings night in opposite directions. Here's what moved — and what could reverse it.

Friday, July 31, 2026 — Full Morning Recap:

S&P 500 +1.7% to 7,437. Nasdaq +2.8%. Dow +1.2%. Microsoft did the heavy lifting at +15.5% on Azure strength, which lit a fire under chips — Lam Research +18%, Micron +18%, SanDisk +26% after Samsung warned the memory shortage deepens next year.

Overnight that spilled into Seoul. Kospi closed up about 18% — the biggest one-day gain on record — with SK Hynix and Samsung each up near 30%. But that index still finished July down over 20%. Violent snapback, not a confirmed trend. Chasing it carries real risk.

After the bell: Apple beat on revenue at $109.4B with iPhone sales +22%, but guided lower on supply constraints while China and services came up short — down ~7% premarket. Amazon rose ~10% premarket as AWS grew 37%, its fastest in 18 quarters. Meta lost 9% Thursday on soft guidance. Investors are picking AI winners individually now, not the group.

The bond market stayed skeptical. Q2 GDP slowed to 1.5%. June core PCE held at 3.3%. The 30-year yield ticked up to 5.22%, near its highest since 2007. The Fed held rates with three officials dissenting for a hike.

Gold pushed back above $4,100/oz. WTI settled just under $84, near $82 this morning as Hormuz traffic picks up. Bitcoin near $65,000, Ether near $1,925 — but spot Bitcoin ETFs are tracking their smallest monthly inflow on record near $205M. Coinbase slid more than 5% after hours on a third straight quarterly loss.

Watch today: Exxon and Chevron earnings, consumer sentiment at 10 a.m. Eastern, and whether long yields keep climbing.
