Nvidia Falls as AI Leaders Call for a Slowdown — Software Stocks Rally
Nvidia is falling before Monday's open, and the reason came from an unusual place: a weekend essay.
Nasdaq 100 futures were down about one point seven percent premarket, with Nvidia off more than two percent. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on AI companies to deliberately slow the pace at which they advance frontier models, and OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk both publicly backed the idea. Amodei was explicit that pacing is not the same as halting — it means giving safety work time to catch up, with independent evaluators inside the labs.
Markets read it through the spending lens. The AI boom has been powered by billions of dollars flowing into chips and data centers, and anything that slows that pace pressures the hardware side of the trade first.
Software moved the opposite way. ServiceNow, Adobe and Workday all pushed higher as investors reassessed the threat from rapid AI development. That's a rotation out of the builders and into the users.
The next test is the opening bell: whether the chip selloff holds, and whether software strength survives.
