Inflation Jumped in August — Stocks Rallied Anyway (Here's Why)

Inflation accelerated Friday and the market went up anyway. Consumer prices rose 0.4% in August, up from 0.1% in July, with gasoline jumping 3.9%. Rate hike odds for next week's Fed meeting surged to nearly 90%, up from 72% the day before.

Yet the S&P 500 closed up 0.9%. The headline number matched forecasts instead of beating them, oil pulled back after this week's spike, and investors were simply relieved the report wasn't worse.

Wednesday is the next test. The Fed announces its decision, and the question that matters is whether policymakers treat this rebound as a temporary energy shock or as something stickier.
