Samsung Forecasts $80B Profit — So Why Did the Stock Fall?
Samsung forecast about $80 billion in quarterly operating profit, the biggest quarter any technology company has ever posted, and the stock fell anyway. That reaction tells you where the AI trade is right now.
Third-quarter operating profit came in around 107 trillion won, nearly nine times last year, with revenue more than doubling as memory-chip shortages drove prices higher. AI demand is now generating enormous real profits, not just spending promises.
But the market is forward-looking. Investors want to know how long those margins can last, and Samsung shares finished down about 2.4%. TSMC also reported record quarterly revenue on AI demand.
Next up: Samsung's full earnings on October 29, with memory margins and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) demand in focus.
The AI boom is showing up in real profits. The market is now pricing how long they last.
