Microsoft Just Walked Away From an AI Data Center, and It Wasn’t the Chips
The AI boom just ran into something no chip can fix: the power grid.
Microsoft has pulled out of an AI data-center deal at Nscale’s Loughton site in Britain. The project was supposed to open next year with about 23,000 Nvidia GB300 GPUs, but repeated delays followed, and grid officials reportedly signaled enough power may not arrive until the 2030s.
Microsoft hasn’t tied its exit to the power delay, and Nscale says the relationship remains strong. But the lesson for investors is loud: electricity and infrastructure are now the real constraints on AI growth.
Watch next: whether Microsoft moves that capacity elsewhere, and whether other cloud giants start walking away from projects stuck in grid queues.
