Applied Materials Record Revenue But Stock Drops | S&P 500 Hits Record | Aug 14 Market Recap

Applied Materials posted the biggest quarter-over-quarter revenue jump in its history — record revenue just over $9 billion, up 25% year over year, an earnings beat, and a raised outlook. The stock fell about 5% after hours anyway.

The culprit was a single line of guidance: flat gross margins next quarter. Investors have stopped questioning AI demand. They're now questioning what it costs to meet it.

That makes two sessions in a row. Cisco beat and guided higher Thursday and still fell 8.4% as gross margin slipped to roughly 66% from 68%, pressured by the rising price of memory inside AI hardware. Micron — which sells that memory — climbed more than 4% the same day. The cost isn't disappearing. It's moving down the chain, from the companies buying parts to the ones selling them.

The broader index shrugged. The S&P 500 closed at a record just under 7,800 after flat July wholesale inflation pushed traders to trim September Fed rate hike odds.

Today's calendar: July retail sales at 8:30 AM ET, and at 10:00 AM ET the SEC votes on its first formal crypto rulemaking, with Bitcoin near $63,000. Watch whether the Applied Materials drop holds at the open.
