The AI Chip Boom Just Hit a Supply Wall — ASML Can't Meet 2027 Demand
The AI chip boom just ran into a supply wall. ASML says its planned supply of chipmaking machines for 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet customer demand, and some customers are already asking about orders for 2029 and 2030.
Why it matters: ASML's lithography systems are essential to producing the advanced chips powering artificial intelligence. Fewer machines means a slower path to more AI chips.
The bigger signal: ASML is already planning roughly 30% more low-NA EUV and immersion capacity for 2027, and says that still may not be enough. Third-quarter sales hit a record €11.7 billion, and shares rose after the update.
Next up: whether ASML can expand capacity fast enough without delaying the AI buildout.
AI demand is now running ahead of the machines that make AI chips. Capacity is the new bottleneck.
